I turned 44 last week. I remember lying in my bed when I was a child of somewhere between six and ten, calculating how old I'd be when the unimaginably distant year of 2000 rolled around. Math was never my strongest subject, but I managed to figure out that in the year 2000 I'd be 41 years old.

Holy geezer, Batman! I'd be an old man.

Now, of course, 41 doesn't seem so old. Even 44 doesn't seem so old. And the 21st century has some amazing things in it, but it's severely lacking in hovercars, personal jetpacks, and orbital or lunar colonies. On the other hand, being able to sit down at my computer and google for information on, well, anything sure as hell beats having to look things up in a set of heavy, increasingly out-of-date and maddeningly general encyclopedia books (as a kid, it seemed that no matter what my most recent obsession, the encyclopedia had little or nothing of value to teach me).
