A Moment of Self-Awareness
Jul. 12th, 2006 02:28 pmAs I sit here at work working on a slow and tedious but not terribly mind-stressing project, I've been listening to podcasts of the Glenn & Helen Show (i.e., Glenn Reynolds aka Instapundit, and his wife, a psychologist). They live in Tennessee--and you can tell.
Glenn Reynolds sounds (to me, anyhow) very much like Tommy Lee Jones, who is also a Tennessee native. Jones' voice is deeper and rougher, but the cadence and inflection is very similar. His wife doesn't sound like anyone in particular but I realized that I really liked listening to her.
Why? The accent.
It's not the same accent I grew up with in Virginia, but it's similar--and I miss it. Which is a little surprising. I don't miss living back there, and I certainly don't miss the heat and humidity and the bugs (though an occasional window-rattling thunderstorm would be nice). But I miss the accent.
My own is nearly non-existent, becoming noticeable mostly when a) I'm tired, or b) I've just been on the phone with my mom or dad. I certainly hear it far more distinctly on my infrequent trips back to Virginia now than I did when I lived there (fish, water, etc). But I didn't realize that I missed it until just now.
