So I've got Mozilla installed in my linux (SuSe 9.0) partition, and I've imported my bookmarks file. I've set up KMail for email and KNode for reading usenet (with scoring! ...as soon as I figure out how that works). I still intend to add WINE and use it to play around with Windows software, but that's for later.

Right now I'm still struggling to figure out how to do all the simple things that I've long since learned to take for granted in Windows. Not that they're any more difficult in Linux, but they became second nature to me in the Windows environment many years ago. Things like changing which programs show on the menus on my KDE desktop. I'm sure there's a simple way to do it, I even stumbled across it last night and added Mozilla to the start menu, but...I can't remember how I got there.

Things on my to-do list now:

  • Figure out what I'm doing wrong with the SuSe Firewall software. I can't get it to run and still have Mozilla (or anything else) successfully connect to the internet. Don't know why yet, though maybe I need to find a way to tell it, 'yes, let these programs through.' Currently I'm not using the firewall, which is not good, but not as bad as if I were doing so in Windows.

  • Find and install WINE.

  • Find out how/if I can export the data files in Agent into my linux mail program (I don't want to lose the saved emails from various mailing lists). Done!

  • Find out how to install/run Agent under WINE

  • Figure out how to connect our digital camera to the digital camera software in Linux.

  • Look for, download and figure out how to install RTCW: Enemy Territory for Linux. I gotta have some kind of online FPS game available... Update! I've downloaded a .run file which is supposed to install the program but it doesn't work. I'm not sure why.

  • Set up a second usr profile for Twoson, so he can netsurf with Mozilla even if none of his games will work--he'll be visiting this weekend.

  • Play around with the audio media software and figure out how to use it.

  • Find out what--if any video media I can make use of. The SuSe manual talks about tv media (if I had a tv-able video card, which I don't), but nothing about viewing various video clip formats found on the net. I don't know if it's even possible, since many of them may be viewable only in Windows [or WINE, I suppose], but I want to find out.

  • Add to this list as I keep encountering stumbling blocks.

Blech, Real. I know a lot of things use it, but it's really nasty. You'll have to let me know when you try it out -- the Real port for OSX doesn't work very well, which is why I hate it, so I'm always interested in whether the other ports of it work better.
