So, Monday evening my lovely and talented wife [livejournal.com profile] snippy and I had dinner with friends. It was both a Happy Quitting Day and Farewell dinner for a friend who is (even as I write this) on his way to Iraq on a one-year contract to do some very important work. He resigned from his position with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office to take this job. It should be a big challenge, and it's probably just the sort of thing he needs. I wish him well.

But the gist of this post is the food. We met our friends for dinner at the Brazil Grill here in Portland. You sit down at a table with a large napkin and heavy duty cutlery. You order drinks. You can visit the salad bar if you like. But let's face it, if you came to the Brazil Grill, you came for the meat.

Ah, the meat. Each table has a plastic disk about three or four inches across. Green on one side, red on the other. Turn it red side up and they leave you alone. Flip it green side up and the food starts arriving.

Wandering "gauchos" arrive at your table every couple of minutes with a skewer (sword) on which is impaled one of over a dozen different meats or sausages. They will provide you with a sample and then move on. A couple of minutes later, he's back with a different food. And so it goes, until you cry uncle and turn the disk red side up to give yourself a chance to try everything on your plate, or to rest a bit before plunging back into the delicious fray. Among the dishes we enjoyed that night:

  • Pork Loin with a chile lime rub - oh so delicious!
  • Marinated chicken legs - very tasty!
  • Bacon-wrapped chicken - it is to die for!
  • Marinated lamb - You can't go wrong with lamb!
  • Linguica sausage - Spicy and tasty!
  • Beef tri-tip - Yum!
  • Bacon-wrapped beef filet - My taste buds have died and gone to heaven!
  • Beef sirloin - Ummmmmm
  • Flank steak - Tasty!
  • Marinated prawns - Also tasty!
  • Empanadas - another big, big hit!

We also were served Parmesan spareribs and roasted cinnamon pineapple (separately), but I don't care for cooked pineapple or parmesan cheese so I didn't try those. We ate and ate and ate. It was obscene! It was delicious! It must be experienced again!

We also ordered four of the five desserts they offer and shared them. It was great!

I want to go back!

Honest to god, I have never had better turkey than they turkey they wrap in bacon.

We call Brasillian barbeque "Meat-A-Palooza" here, and visits are coordinated so that we fast most of the day. Ours is also BYOB, which is quite handy.

"Meat-A-Palooza" is a good name for it! As it happens I was fasting the day we went there. Not specifically for that reason. I fast two-four days a week, and Monday was one of them this week. I'm not sure it made that much difference in how much I could eat, though.

But--damn! We gotta go back!
