So we (re)discovered at work today. I got in to work, booted up my PC and found that I could not connect to the office network. Just about then the VP of Finance (which also covers IT) came 'round to tell us that, yes, the network was down--and would be all day.

Which meant, of course, NO INTERNET! Nooooooooo!

Actually, the loss of our internet connection would be annoying and troublesome, but nothing more. But that wasn't the only issue. The whole network was kaput.

Which meant that I could do almost nothing. Aside from a few files I use for my own purposes (things nobody else in the office works with), all my files are saved on the departmental drive on the server. After all, the whole point of the network is putting the files where everyone can use them and they'll be backed up periodically.

I couldn't even open Outlook to read my old email or check my calendar. I was almost completely dead in the water. I made a few phone calls* to pin down RSVPs for the cabinet meeting Wednesday morning. And...that was about it.

Turns out that we had "a rain shower in the server room" over the weekend, according to the head of our IT department. I don't know if that was merely a figure of speech for a burst pipe or if we actually had rain leaking in (we're on the top floor of the building so it's possible that she was describing the situation literally).

The servers seem to be okay, but the network gear was completely shot. It's all being replaced. I hope the network will be up again tomorrow--I have a lot of prep work to do for the cabinet meeting that I can't even start until I can access the server files again--but I don't know for sure.

*And that was possible only because I'd printed out a copy of the cabinet roster Friday. Otherwise I couldn't even have done that because the roster is saved...on the server.

Aaah you know you don't have to be on the top floor for rain to leak in. I started a new job today. I'm on the fourth floor, and there's a meeting room closed 'until further notice', and we were told it's because there's rain leaking in through the roof.

Trouble is, reception's upstairs on the fifth floor, and there's a radio station above them on the sixth floor. Apparently if you stand in said meeting room, remove the false ceiling tiles and look up you can see the sky, two floors above. It's been like that since they moved into the (newly-constructed) building about two years ago. On the fifth floor there's a lovely corner of the office with serious water damage to the walls, directly above the closed meeting room. What fun!

At least it's not over our server room, which is on the third floor and appears to be waterproof (although judging by the emails that've been stacking up since my account was created last week, the file servers aren't playing nice at the moment).
