Yesterday:
snippy and I returned from our weekend at the beach about 1 p.m. We bought a slice of pizza each for lunch on the way home and ate it there. We measured the living and dining rooms, then zipped off to Miller Paint to buy primer (1 gal.), ceiling paint (2 gal.) and wall paint (4 gal.), plus roller covers, roller pan liners, and disposable gloves, with a painter's cap and some stirring sticks thrown in. Back at home, Snippy emptied the buffet and we emptied the dining room of furniture, save for my computer desk and a filing cabinet, which we dragged into the center of the room away from the walls and covered with a tarp. Then I got to tape all along the baseboards and around the doorways and windows and the electrical outlets.
This morning: I drove Snippy to work, then stopped by Miller Paint to buy another large tarp and a roller pan (we have one somewhere, but damned if we can find it). I primed two walls of the dining room (we had to cover the patches where we tried various colors before deciding on one). Spent the morning with all the doors and windows open, letting the primer dry.
This afternoon: I drove off to Popeye's for lunch, then stopped by Bridgetown Hobbies on the way home. Also I put some gas in the car so Snippy won't have to worry about running out of gas on the way to her engineering class tomorrow night. I also discovered that Future Dreams, a sci fi/fantasy and comic store I'd thought extinct was actually still around. They're in a new location; I'd thought they went out of business when I last looked at their old address.
Then it was back to the house, where I determined that the primer was dry. So I got to spend some time taping the top of the wall all around the dining room in preparation for painting the ceiling. After that I painted the ceiling (surprise!). I listened to an episode of Columbo on the Tivo while I worked (I'm still planning to write my Dead Like Me/Columbo crossover eventually--this was research). I got a call from Belmont Computers (plug, plug) that my PC had been resurrected. For those who don't pay obsessive attention to the minutia of my life, the motherboard had failed. They replaced it, upgraded my OS from SuSE Linux 9.3 to 10.1 in the process, and I picked it up that afternoon. In fact, I'm posting from my computer (instead of the laptop, as I've been doing for two weeks) right now!
Tonight: I pulled down all the edging tape on the walls and retaped around the edges of the ceiling. I'd thought about getting a headstart on painting one or two of the dining room walls tonight, but some of the plaster in one corner of the room cracked and fell away. So we pulled down the rest of the loose plaster (not much, thankfully) and Snippy replastered it. Tomorrow morning she'll sand it and I'll prime it. Then perhaps I can paint it tomorrow afternoon or evening. This is disappointing because that's the corner in which my computer desk sits when it's not looming in the middle of the room covered by a tarp. So I've temporarily installed my PC in the front bedroom, where I sit surrounded by countless books and boxes of junk stuffed away in here while we paint.
Notes: The ceiling looks good, if I say so myself. It'll need a few touch-ups where I didn't have enough paint on the roller, but overall it looks good. But I used almost an entire gallon of paint on the ceiling of the dining room. Which leaves one more for the living room ceiling, which is much bigger. We're gonna need more paint when we get to that project later this summer.
I'm so happy to have my PC back in working order. Using that tiny cramped laptop keyboard and the touchpad is a pain in the ass. Better by far than going entirely without, so I won't complain too much. But still a pain in the ass. A real split keyboard and optical mouse...oh yeah, that's the stuff, baby!
