I'm about to have my horizons expanded. [livejournal.com profile] snippy and I will be visiting Jamaica soon. This will be my first trip to Jamaica or, indeed, to any foreign nation. For that matter, I've never been outside the continental US before. I've traveled to and fro within the continental US several times both by air and once by road, but never set foot outside the States before.

I wasn't terribly interested in taking the trip initially. Why? Inertia, I expect. The trip came up unexpectedly and I think I dreaded rearranging my life and having to get ready for the trip. Nor am I looking forward to spending eleven hours (minimum) in airports or on planes. And I'm not thrilled about spending a week in the company of [livejournal.com profile] snippy's family; she doesn't spend more time around them than she has to these days, and with good reason. But that's one of the reasons [livejournal.com profile] snippy wants me to go--she wants and needs my support if she's going to hang out with them for a week. So I'm going.

But at this point I'm actually looking forward to it. When will I get another chance to travel to Jamaica, after all? And it's not like staying in an air-conditioned resort on a Caribbean island will be awful. Well, I suppose it could be--things like that can happen, of course. But I don't think it will. I think we'll have a wonderful time. Aside from, you know, getting twitchy when we can't indulge our addiction to the internet on a regular basis.

We're going to miss Pirate Night at the resort, though, dammit. They have theme events every night, but Pirate night is Friday night. We're arriving on a Saturday and flying out again on the following Friday, so we'll miss it on both ends. Damn. And we're gonna be in the Caribbean, too. Well, if I ever run a Caribbean pirate role-playing adventure, I'll have some firsthand experience with the area anyhow.

It's the weekend! ...almost. And Yay! Three-day weekend for Yours Truly, in fact. I get Monday off as well.

I've been reading Stargate: SG-1 fanfic lately. There's a website devoted to annual awards for Stargate fic and I've been trolling through the nominations and the '03 winning entries. There's some good stuff. A lot of it is very long, too. Categories include standard action adventure stories, episode "fix" stories in which the writer provides her own "do-over" for episodes they think were botched for whatever reasons; lost scene stories that fill in scenes that were "missing" from a particular episode or from the series as a whole (i.e., scenes that the writer wishes had been filmed); cross-over fic (my favorite kind of fanfic); alternate reality fic (mirror universes and various other sorts); hurt/comfort stories in which one character or another is horribly abused and then tenderly nursed by another--not my cup of tea, really; [character]-"whumping" stories in which a character (Jack O'Neill or Daniel Jackson 9 times out of 10) gets seriously battered in the course of the adventure; plus the usual wide assortment of relationship stories (hetero and slash) covering every conceivable permutation of lovers, and stories that focus on a particular character but which don't fall into one of the explicit ship/whumping/H/C categories.

Friends will be coming over tonight, unless they bail on us. Which isn't impossible. Perhaps we'll play a board game. Or maybe I'll run a pick-up game of Fudge. I have a "Gilligan's Island meest Call of Cthulhu" adventure prepped, but I want to save it for when I actually have 7 players (one for each castaway), so I won't be doing that tonight.

Hmm. Almost time to go downstairs and man the front desk/switchboard until closing. Then I'm free for the weekend! Yay! I'm so bored today. It's been really slow today.
