So my Lovely & Talented Wife (hereinafter referred to as LTW) has heard from the garage.  The car stopped working because the distributor cap came off.  It seems that whoever did the last tune-up on the car failed to properly secure it.

I can safely say that I didn't do it.  I wouldn't know a distributor cap if it bit me on the ass.  I've never been interested in learning how to repair automobiles; that's what you pay professionals for.  In this case, however, we didn't have to pay them much at all.  Which is just how we like it.

Would I _mind_ knowing the difference between a distributor cap and an oil cap? No. Do I care enough to have learned it? Apparently not, since I don't even know what you mean by an "oil cap" unless you mean the cap you remove to add oil (in which case I do know).

It may be easier for guys, if those "hidden camera" tv stings are any indication. In any case, I've always just asked around for the names of reliable and trustworthy mechanics and gone to them when I needed work done on my car.
