My parents' eldest child is in the Charlotte, North Carolina regional airport on a three hour layover before taking a flight to Roanoke, Virginia. From there I'll obtain a rental car and drive to Lynchburg to fall into bed in a hotel room with my lovely and talented (and tired and sleepy) wife for a nap before driving down to visit my parents.

This trip isn't nearly the marathon we endured on our way to Jamaica lo these several years ago now. That one started at midnight and we were most of a full day in getting there, what with two changes of plane, customs in Jamaica and an hour-long bus ride from the Jamaica airport to our ultimate destination.

This flight started at 10:20 p.m. Snippy managed to sleep some (but not enough) on the flight. I couldn't. I squirmed and writhed and wriggled in my seat in the semi-darkness, trying not disturb my seatmates any more than I could absolutely help. I'm a restless person at the best of times; crammed into a narrow seat with no room to stretch or shift position or cross my legs is awful. Otherwise, though, the trip was uneventful.

We're enjoying (for certain values of "enjoying") a three-hour layover here in Charlotte now. (Three and a half, really, since a strong tailwind got us here about half an hour ahead of schedule.

On the house sale front, after weeks of things moving at a glacial pace, we're rushing forward at a breakneck pace. Snippy met with a contractor a while back to discuss a list of fixes and cosmetic touch-ups to the house. Two weeks later, he still hadn't given us a bid; he called to tell her that he was working on the project. She pointed out that she hadn't received a bid from him, and he said she would get one soon.

In the mean time, we'd contacted another contractor through our realtor. He came by and Snippy walked him through the same list. Two days later he emailed a bid. Two days after that, we signed a contract, paid a deposit, and the next day (today) he started work. He who hesitates is lost.

The foundation repair guys will be getting to work on the house in a week or two. And landscapers (also contacted through our agent) will be sprucing up the yard.

I went down to the city Department of Transportation office yesterday and got a permit to place a storage pod in front of our house for a few days, then ordered the pod delivered. We'll spend a long weekend emptying the house of the many, many boxes of books and whatnot, so we can stage it for showing. Our realtor wants to start showing it by mid-November!

After months of slow or no progress, things are racing. The sale of the house suddenly feels a lot more real. But we're not going to worry about it until we get back.
