So I'm sitting in the waiting room at the "local" Hyundai dealership. (They moved about twice as far away from us as they were when we bought the car, so now it's quite a drive to get it serviced.) We started hearing an intermittent scraping noise from the rear of the car in the last week. I was fairly certain it meant we needed to replace the brakes. But only fairly certain; we feared that we'd be faced with some catastrophic problem requiring immediate and expensive repair.

I made an appointment and drove out here this morning to have the car looked over. Less than five minutes after I sat down in the waiting room, the service guy came to tell me that "that didn't take long" and that the rear brakes were gone. Which, as I say, i suspected was the problem. But it was good to have it confirmed. They're replacing the brakes now, and it'll take a couple of hours. They'll drive the car around afterward to check for any other noises, but I'm pretty sure replacing the brakes will be all that's required.

LeBron James. I don't follow sports, but I could hardly miss the kerfuffle when he jumped ship to leave Cleveland to go play for a team in Florida. I saw the open letter from the Mayor of Cleveland about his cruel, treacherous betrayal of the people of Cleveland. All I could think about was Larry the Liquidator (Danny DeVito's) speach at the end of Other People's Money.seen here.

"Ah, but we can't, goes the prayer. We have a responsibility to our employees. To the community. What will happen to them? I got two words for you. Who. Cares?

"Care about them? Why? They didn't care about you? They sucked you dry...."

By moving to Florida, where there is no state income tax, James will save millions in taxes on his income. Why on earth should he give a damn about Cleveland? The state and the city received millions for doing absolutely nothing. Fans got their money's worth when they paid for tickets to see him play. What possible incentive did they provide him to stay? Fans? He'll have those anywhere he goes. Money? He gets to keep more of the money HE EARNS by going elsewhere. "Community spirit" or "loyalty"? I refer you again to DeVito's speech, above.

In short, the Mayor of Cleveland can kiss LeBron James's ass.
