I escaped to the mall yesterday to stay cool. Found a table in the food court next to an electrical outlet and spent about two hours writing on the laptop. It was a productive session. I finally found the line of attack for the story I've been trying to write this week and got some words produced. Yay!

Today, having finally figured out what story I was trying to write--which doesn't look a thing like the story I started out writing this week--I spent about four hours carving away everything that didn't look like an elephant. It's still pretty rough, but with some more work (maybe tonight but definitely tomorrow and/or Sunday) it should be hammered into shape to mail out by Monday morning at the latest. I'll count that as a win on my goal of getting a story out this week.

Upon arriving home this morning after dropping my lovely and talented wife off at work, I was accosted by our next door neighbor. She walked up the driveway to put a sheet of paper under the rear windshield wiper of the car, saying, "Here's your note."

I picked it up, saying, "What note?" as I had no idea what she was talking about. She kept walking, tossing off a "Yeah, right," or something similar over her shoulder.

I read the note. It was typewritten and was clearly aimed at said neighbor (and her partner). It pointed out that their habit of leaving their dogs unattended in the back yard for days at a time--they travel a lot--to bark incessantly late into the night was not the behavior of a good neighbor. It said that they should take the dogs inside or otherwise deal with them. It ended with a statement that a letter to the county Animal Control people was sealed in an envelope and ready to be mailed if things didn't change. Said neighbor had written "I am a good neighbor. WTF?" at the bottom of the note.

Well, no--actually, you're not. The anonymous author of that note is exactly right. I tried to return the note, but the neighbor had already disappeared into her house again. I wanted to say, I didn't leave that note, but I certainly agree with it. Eh. Whatever. They're clearly convinced that we left it for them, though why us as opposed to anyone else in the neighborhood who's had to listen to those damn dogs barking their heads off for hours at a time night after night, I can't imagine.
