Yard Sale Aftermath
Jul. 21st, 2003 12:04 amThe yard sale began at about 8 a.m. (despite the posting start time of 9 a.m.) and lurched along until about 4 p.m. (two hours past the planned ending time). We sold a couple of dressers, a single bed (mattress, box springs and metal frame), a bookcase, some china, a few other things. In theory we also sold a blue leather couch we're trying to unload (we bought a new one to be delivered in September). Overall it was a marginal success; we got rid of some stuff, but still had plenty left.
It was a very hot day.
snippy sat outside most of the day, and mostly stayed in the shade, but it was hot. She doesn't handle the heat well in the best of circumstances. So by the time the yardsale dragged to a halt, she was overheated, tired, cranky and feeling ill. Eventually she had a full-on meltdown before taking a nap and spending the rest of the evening parked on the sofa right in front of our anemic air conditioner (well, not really anemic--it's just not designed to cool a space as large as our combined living/dining room area).
Our friends came over for our regular weekly gaming night. We played two games of Settlers of Cataan and
snippy won both of them--to her surprise as much as everyone else's. Both games she said she looked at the board, looked at her hand, and realized that she had everything she needed to win on her next turn. And so she did.
So today we dragged all the stuff that didn't sell out to the street and put up a sign that read Free stuff.
snippy and I took both cars over to Home Depot, where we bought a vanity, a countertop and a mirrored cabinet to tuck away in the garage in anticipation of the bath remodel next month. We got home to find several chairs, two cabinets and some other things gone from the Free Stuff display. About the time we got home, several people converged on the site and two more chairs, two chairs and a table also vanished. By the end of the day, we'd disposed of most of the stuff we'd wanted to dispose of, and all but a couple of pieces that still remain have been claimed and will be picked up in the next day or two.
Hurray for us! On the other hand, The Hallmark Channel has been running Shogun last week, and ran all the episodes back to back today.
snippy and I both want to reread the novel now. We both once owned it, but don't think we do (the downside of being disorganized bibliophiles is not always knowing which books you still own...or where). So we drove over to Powells to buy two copies (what? one of us wait while the other reads it? are you insane?).
They didn't have it. Shock. Dismay. Frustration and anger. So we drove over to a downtown Borders (at about 7:45 on Sunday evening). They were closed, no big surprise. So we drove over to the mall to the Barnes & Noble there. They were closed. They close at 7 p.m. on Sundays. Well *#($*#.
On the gripping hand, we got home and after we'd cooled off, we frolicked in the air conditioned coolness. Hurray for us again!
