Being Sick Sucks!
Jan. 17th, 2009 09:38 pmHere I am with a 3-1/2 day weekend (I get Monday off for MLK Jr. Day, and our office closes at 3 p.m. the Friday before a holiday), and what I am I doing?
Sleeping badly, enduring body aches, chills, feeling overheated, feeling utterly exhausted, and too braindead to do more than lie around reading a comic or watching television. Oh, and I have a fever of nearly 101 degrees--I didn't check my temp until a little while ago, but I can't say I'm surprised.
My lovely and talented wife is out of town visiting friends, so it's just me and the boy. He's pretty self-sufficient, so I was anticipating a nice, quiet long weekend during which I could get some writing done, and spend Sunday afternoon visiting a friend for a playdate. Instead, I spent what seemed like an entire weekend tossing and turning in bed, too hot or too cold and with absolutely no energy. Even when I was awake, I was so exhausted that I just lay there in the dark not moving--save to occasionally check the time. 3 a.m. 5 a.m. 6 a.m. 8 a.m. 9 a.m. 10 a.m. 11 a.m.
I probably could have continued to lay there all day but I got up and stumbled out to collapse on the sofa. The boy made me some toast with butter and brought it to me with a glass of water and some advil and sudafed. And I spent the next six hours in that not-quite-sleeping stupor on the sofa with the 70s-era music channel playing in the background. Lots of very, very strange dreams--but I always get that when I'm sick.
Rallied long enough about 4:30 to drive to the nearby Safeway and get some chinese food for dinner for the two of us, and stock up on orange juice and a couple of other things. (I felt absolutely dehydrated this morning, so I've been laying off the soda pop today--water, chocolate milk or OJ instead. About an hour ago, I took my temperature and verified that I was running a fever. So I called my friend and told her I wouldn't be visiting tomorrow--I don't want her to catch it.
At this very moment I don't feel too bad, but I know it's only temporary. So I'm going to sign off (yes, the whinging is over for now) and go continue reading the adventures of Invincible and watching Terminator 2 on cable.
