The original set-up (as documented previously):

The standing desk:

It takes up a lot less floor space in the dining room, which makes [livejournal.com profile] snippy happy, though she wants to get some sort of small enclosed cabinet/cupboard thing to hide the modem, router, surge protector and tangle of wires from prying eyes. And it could use one more shelf along the top. And I want to brace it more thoroughly to make sure it's stable. But I have my standing desk now.

And it's working. The high stool with back (not pictured) we got for me lets me sit for a little if I want, but I'm using it as little as possible. The point of this exercise is to stand, not sit on a higher chair after all.

The new (lighter) flatscreen monitor is very nice. Alas, my video card doesn't support the full 1200 x 900 pixel display the monitor is capable of. So eventually I suppose I'll have to upgrade my video card.

Being new and all, is there a reason for the standing desk? (In another entry, perhaps?) It's a neat idea!

Why a standing computer desk?

The immediate cause for this change was this report (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/11/071119130734.htm) that my lovely and talented wife forwarded to me. It appears that simply standing instead of sitting can have a beneficial effect on health and fitness. Real exercise is still important, but according to this study even in the absence of exercise more standing and moving around can significantly help.

More generally, I sit at a desk/computer all day at work. In the evenings I tend to spend a lot of time at my computer at home as well. I figured that spending that time on my feet instead of my ass couldn't hurt. Hence swapping out the old computer desk for the standing station.

Wow, very interesting. I stand most of the day at work, but during weekends and vacations I am constantly sitting. I always gain weight during those times, and I wonder if it's more due to the sitting than actually more eating! *ponders*
