He wasn't just lacking the "excuse of impulsively jumping in front of his wife to protect her" his brain didn't develop even a a gut level impulse to phase when someone pointed a gun at him after having been nearly fatally shot the first time. To me that's beyond stupid because it isn't just a matter of his not thinking it's a matter of his not reacting on any level.
