Morbo is furious and humiliated. Morbo is furious at those who have foised this travesty called "Firefox" upon him and humiliated by his need to ask puny humans for assistance. But Morbo is nothing if not willing to do what it takes to get things done, whether it's annihilating a planet full of annoying aliens or getting his web browser to work properly again.

So...I tried to replace Firefox version 1.5. something with the new Firefox 2. Having had a horrific experience once before trying to upgrade from 1.5 to 2, I elected this time to simply delete my version 1.5 installation and install v2 from scratch.

It didn't help. My Firefox installation was irretrievably screwed up. It installed. It launches when you hit the button. But it then spends an eternity (or as long as I'm willing to let it run) "contacting Google" and never, ever completes that task. Nor does it EVER dispaly any of the buttons. No file button, no Home button, no Back button, no Help button. No Bookmarks. NOTHING.

Nothing but the box for typing in a URL directly. I deleted the previously existing Firefox folder. I deleted the hidden .firefox folders. I removed every piece of Firefox software I could find using YAST. Tried reinstalling. Still get the same problem.

Firefox is FUBAR and damned if I can figure out how or why.

So screw it, says I. I've downloaded and am currently using Opera. But only until and unless someone can tell me how the hell to fix this thing.

Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?

Edited to add: I'm running Suse Linux 10.1, not Windows, by the way. I suppose I should have mentioned that up front.

Download and install ccleaner (crap cleaner). It deletes cookie files, temp files, etc. and one of those might be messing you up. You can find it at download.com, etc.

Thanks for the rec, but unfortunately I'm running Suse Linux so it doesn't look like ccleaner will help.

Back when I was test-driving Ubuntu I upgraded Firefox from 1.5 to 2.0. The upgrade was done by Ubuntu's package management system and went smoothly. What mechanism did you use on Suse to upgrade Firefox?

I tried simply downloading and extracting the tarball into a firefox directory, then launching it. I've also tried deleting everything firefox related I could find, both manually and with YAST and then installing via YAST.

Doesn't seem to make any difference.
