Now with SuSE Linux 9.3!
Oct. 13th, 2005 08:32 pmI am now the proud owner of a computer running SuSE Linux 9.3, having received the CDs yesterday and upgraded my previous OS (9.0) this evening. It went very well--not that I didn't backup all my files first. I'm hoping that the new version of the OS will allow me to hear/view a wider variety of audio and video formats. It may have been technically possible to do so under 9.0, but I didn't want to mess with it. The newer release apparently allows for easier installation of software that will read a number of common formats (though licensing issues mean that it initially comes with some serious limitations according to the support forums I've read).
Ordering the CDs was a chore. Getting them from the Linux shop online cost only $12.95, as opposed to close to $100 if I bought the release commercially. But the Linux shop only accepts money orders or PayPal. No online credit card payments. So I had to finish activating the PayPal account I'd started to set up months earlier, which involved having to call my bank and get some information from them to validate the account. Then I had to transfer some money into my PayPal account and wait for it to clear, then transfer to the shop before the disks finally shipped.
But ship they did. Five CDs arrived in my mailbox yesterday.
Why CDs instead of a single DVD?
Because I don't have a DVD drive in my computer.
Why?
Because I chose not to get one when I bought this system a couple-three years ago, despite knowing that DVDs would eventually become the media of choice for software.
Why?
Because a DVD drive was more than I could afford.
Why?
Because I had other features I wanted more than I wanted a DVD drive.
Why?
Because none of the software I had or contemplated getting at that time came on DVD.
But the CDs worked fine and I've got a nifty new SuSE 9.3 OS to play with. Yay!
