Well, I'm committed now. I reinstalled Linux on my PC tonight...and deleted the Windows partition. There's no turning back now. (Well, okay, there is--I could reinstall Win98 if I really wanted to. But I don't.)

It's a clean install with only a couple of additional programs added in immediately. Gemini for reading email and news and Opera (dammit) for my browser. I thought that a complete reinstall would fix my issues with Firefox, but that isn't the case. I STILL can't get the damn thing to install or run. I have no idea why, and it's frustrating.

... reformat the drive before installing Linux? Doesn't sound like you did, based on the "deleted the partition" bit, and there are issues WinBlows can cause with other OS's which WILL NOT GO AWAY until you have actually erased all trace of the thing from your drive. At least that's been my experiences with it in its many incarnations.

That's possible, I suppose. And if it really comes to it, could do that. But I'm not so sure anymore that it's just a Windows issue. A couple of weeks ago--even before I booted Windows--I tried downloading a patch/upgrade to Firefox and it caused some problems. Rebooting my system cleared them up and I didn't worry about it.

I'm wondering if maybe the latest build of Firefox just won't work with my system (I'm on SuSE 9.0, and they're up to 9.3 last I heard). If I could get an older build of Firefox, that might work--but all the links I can find lead back to the main Firefox download page, and the only one there is the current 1.5 Beta.
