Week Four -- so far, so good
May. 27th, 2005 12:10 pmDid the second of three weekly runs yesterday after work. This is the fourth of nine weeks in the Couch Potato to 5K program I'm following. I'm up to the "more running than walking" stage now. This week the schedule is:
5 min brisk walk to warm up
3 min jog
1.5 min walk
5 min jog
2.5 min walk
3 min jog
1.5 min walk
5 min jog
Five more weeks and I'll be at the very simple "run for 30 minutes" stage.
I'm using a stopwatch I got at Radio Shack to keep track of the intervals. I discussed my burning calves with the lovely and talented
snippy, who suggested that stretching before I run might be the problem. I said I thought you were supposed to do a little stretching first. She said, no, now they say you shouldn't. Time and scientific consensus march on, I guess.
Sometimes I think Woody Allen was right. Someday the scientists are going to tell us that eating huge quantities of red meat, smoking and drinking are the path to ideal health....
Anyhow, I've made a point of not stretching out prior to my runs and my calves haven't bothered me, so maybe that was the problem. I am also making a point of stretching after my runs because it would be nice not to hobble around like an old man when they tighten up.
Yesterday's run was tough. It was hot here yesterday (and supposed to be hotter today--90 to 95!). Nonetheless, I persevered. And perspired severely. Yay, me!
