Foul Language Imminent!
Mar. 5th, 2005 07:07 amSo I discovered this nifty new (old -- 2002) game. Freedom Force. I played it while visiting friends in Virginia. So I went online and ordered a copy thru Amazon. Got home, downloaded the demo and installed it on my computer. Every ****ing time I try to start the goddamn thing, my system crashes and I have to power cycle the system to reboot. The readme file suggests that the software has a problem with some ATI Radeon video cards. Well...shit. ATI Radeon 9200 here.
My system is dual booted (SUSE Linux 9.0 and Windows 98 SE). My Linux doesn't particularly like the ATI card either (it works, but can't use the 3D features). I'm beginning to think my purchase of that video card wasn't my cleverest move. I sweet talked
snippy into letting me install the demo on her machine, and it works just fine. &@$#~!
Then I get an email today from Amazon refunding the purchase price of the game. The email never explicitly said that the order was canceled, but.... So if they didn't have it to sell, why the $#@& did they accept my order in the first place? After cursing up a storm, I called a couple of local stores to check but as I suspected, they don't have it. The game is out of print.
Fine. Be that way. The new version of the game Freedom Force vs the Third Reich (superheroes vs Nazis!) is coming out March 8th. I'll just buy that one, damn it. It's newer, with a new game engine. Maybe that one will work on my system.
So I downloaded the demo for FFvTTR and installed it. Can you, Gentle Reader, guess the result?
That's right, it won't run either. On the other hand, it doesn't crash my system. I just get a couple of error messages. Specifically:
"MSVCRT.DLL file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:RtlGetNtVersionNumbers"
and
[path to the executable] "a device attached to the system is not functioning"
Well, what the $%#@ do those mean? And how do I fix them? It's enough to make me want to cry. All I want is to play a goddamn computer game.
Edit: Someone on a game forum answered my question about the error messages. A simple fix (renaming the MSVCRT.DLL file so my computer used a different one that works with Win98) worked like a charm. *sigh* So now the demo for FFvTTR is doing the same thing the demo for the original game is doing--the screen goes black, the cursor changes to the "I'm busy" cursor...and then the system locks up tight as a drum. I have to power cycle the box to reboot. I think it's a video card issue, but damned if I know what to do about it. (The original demo works just fine on Snippy's computer. And she's offered to let me play the game on her machine when I buy it. And I will if it comes to that, but--dammit!--I want it to work on MY computer.)
And I've re-ordered the original game via GoGamer (thanks Andyhat!).
