Sep. 24th, 2003 04:09 pm...I've given up on Planetside (see rants below). On the other hand, I'm having a lot of fun with Battlefield 1942, a WWII on-line multi-player first person shooter. It's not as demanding on system resources as Planetside, so I'm not nearly as aggravated by lag (though it still happens sometimes). Plus BF1942, unlike Planetside, has a single-player option so you can play offline against bots if you want. Or if you need the practice. Or just want to explore the maps without getting your ass shot off repeatedly by the enemy.
But wait! There's more! There's a Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942 that updates the weapons, vehicles and uniforms to Desert Storm era. The maps remain the same, though (ie., WWII battlefields), so it's kinda wierd to find yourself fighting, well, the Iraqis...in France, Britain, Germany, Italy or Sicily. Now you too can die gloriously in the French countryside, blasted by an Apache helicopter; or get shot down over Britain by a Stinger....
Actually, there are scores of mods, from Battlefield: G I Joe, where you can fight in a cartoonish landscape using cartoonish weapons lifted (from what I've read--I have no interest in this) from the G.I. Joe commerci--uh, cartoon. And futuristic mods, including that is "entirely not unlike Star Wars" (to quote the description). And then there is Eve of Destruction, a Vietnam-era mod, and several Pirate mods in which you can run about attacking landbased fortresses and towns or sail around on sailing ships and fight sea battles. (That one actually interests me.)
