It's a two-fer!
The Revelation:
snippy left voicemail while I was at lunch today. I called back and she dropped a big bomb on me. Twoson, previously scheduled to visit his dad this weekend, will be staying with us. His dad called and it turns out that Oneson and friend have strep. So it would be inadvisable for Twoson to go visit. Snippy agrees, as do I. And we were really looking forward to having the weekend to ourselves. (Snippy is feeling "like butter scraped over too much toast," to quote Bilbo Baggins. Worn out. Depleted. Emtionally exhausted.)
So perhaps she'll go out to a movie tonight. Perhaps I'll take Twoson out to a movie tonight. But not the same movie, if you get my drift. Give her some alone time. And I'll have to be sure to give her plenty of slack this weekend, so she can recover.
The Realization: I have a headache. Not a terrible headache, just a little discomfort. It came on fairly suddenly. And I've been having these mild headaches fairly often of late. So I take a couple of Ibuprofen and go on with my life. But it suddenly occurs to me that I ate a couple of Ghirardelli Squares not long ago--dark chocolate with white mint filling. I really like them.
But they're loaded with sugar. And I don't drink sugared soda anymore. Or iced tea with sugar. I drink Pepsi One or Diet Pepsi and I put Splenda in my iced tea. Have I reduced my sugar habit to the point that a couple of sugar-heavy chocolates can give me a headache? Maybe so. Aside from these Ghirardelli chocolates (and the occasional Reisen chew), I don't eat that much chocolate these days. And a lot of the chocolate I keep around anymore is the low-carb stuff--that constitutes my emergency stash these days. When the real chocolate (the Ghirardellis and the Reisen) are gone, I fall back on the low-carb stuff. So I'm not eating all that much candy anymore.
(This should in no way be taken to mean that I'm not still eating more carbs and more calories overall than I need, but my intake of sugar is definitely lower than it was for a very long time. But low enough that a couple of chocolates can give me a headache? Could be.)
