It burns, it burns!

Then I realize that there are vocals in this orchestral, smooth-as-syrup so-as-not-to-offend arrangement. I listen to the words.
It's the Musak version of American Pie by Don MacLean.
There's an old Saturday Night Live skit in which guest-host Paul Simon plays himself as a young songwriter, signing a deal with the devil for fame and fortune. Then cut to Old Paul Simon many years later. He steps into an elevator and converses with a couple there. A Muzak version of his music is playing. The elevator breaks down and stops. Paul is horrified that he cannot escape the Muzak butchering of his music.
Cue the appearance of the Devil. Paul tells the Devil that he's ready to go now, he's ready to accept his hellish fate. The Devil laughs and tells him that this is his hell--eternity trapped in an elevator listening the Muzak versions of his music. Bwah-hah-hah-hah.
It was like that.
