Comment to this entry and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. You must then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

from [personal profile] raine, who requested Highlander, Buffy, and Stargate: SG-1

Highlander
What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I was a big fan of the movie. It was flawed, but--loads of fun. I was skeptical of the series at first, but I gave it a chance. I missed much of the first season--it was aired erratically on a local independent station, but what I saw I liked. Eventually it became "must watch" viewing for myself and a bunch of fellow SF fans and gamers. Why? Mostly because the writing was generally very good; idiot plots were mercifully few, and characters tended to do what we thought they ought to do in a given situation. It got to the point where we'd discuss what we'd like to see--and it would appear in an episode a couple of weeks later. We joked that they were bugging our conversations, but really the writers were simply focusing on the same things that interested us.

Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I'll still read Highlander fic when I stumble across good ones, but mostly fandom seems to have moved on. All my highlander fic for years has involved original characters in the HL universe who have a peripheral relationship (at best) with the TV characters.

Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
Pretty much all of the second, third and fourth seasons. The first season was very hit and miss--they hadn't yet quite hit their stride. The fifth season veered into the awful Ahriman arc and killed off Richie, and the sixth season was mostly forgettable as well.

Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
I rarely write fanfic anymore, and mostly it's crossovers when I do. I don't do graphics. I don't participate in discussions online much anymore. Mostly I still participate via online RPGs in which Highlander characters (or original Highlander-based characters) are involved.

Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
Not especially. New fans might produce more fanfic, which I always like to read if it's well written, but like most fandoms (in my experience) the fandom tends to dwindle once a show has been off the air for a long while. The series has been over for a decade or more at this point.

Buffy
What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I hated the movie, probably for the same reasons Joss Whedon did. Interesting premise, but badly executed and painfully campy. I didn't watch the first few eps because I figured it would really, really suck. But I heard good things about it, and finally caught an episode--and I liked it. So I started watching and really got into it.

Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I've already moved on. As far as I'm concerned, the series ended with the final episode of S4--minus the shocking surprise appearance of Dawn. The introduction of the magical sister who became the focus of everyone's life sucked more than words can tell. The pussification of Spike, and the whole Spike/Buffy thing was even worse. Don't get me started on the sucktacular "Magic Addiction" bullshit with Willow.

No, I've moved on already.

Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
Again, the second through fourth seasons are all good, in my opinion. There were clunkers, to be sure. But not many. And the highs were really high.

Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Not really, no. Not anymore, save in online RPGs, as above.

Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
No. Most of the fan activity I see anymore is heavily invested in the S5-S6 stuff (Dawn, Spuffy, etc.) that I can't stand. Do Not Want.

Stargate: SG-1
What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I enjoyed the movie (or at least the first part, up to where they get the stargate working). I was skeptical about a tv series. But we got Showtime around the time S3 was airing and I watch a few eps and I absolutely loved it. It was SF but wasn't a Trek clone--the premise of contemporary Americans exploring the galaxy with contemporary weapons and equipment via the stargate neatly prevented the writers from falling into the familiar Trek tropes. It was DIFFERENT. And, like Highlander when it was best, it was smartly written. The characters tried to solve their problems as quickly and easily as possible. Drama comes from protracted struggles and difficult victories, which the writers want; but the characters want to win--and do so as quickly and easily and safely as possible. Bad writers cheat. Stargate mostly had good writers.

Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I still enjoy reading fanfic when I can find good, new fic. But mostly, I've moved on.

Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
I hate to sound like a broken record, but the early seasons were the best. I've come to the tentative conclusion that most tv series have maybe five good seasons worth of stories in them before they start repeating themselves or have to stretch the premise all out of shape to keep going. In my universe, SG-1 ran about five seasons, then ended.

Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Only in online RPGs.

Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
I don't really care. The series is over.
