Day Three: "I will finish what I write."

Heinlein's third rule for writers (see above) came in handy today. I began my writing session with serious doubts about the story. Nonetheless, I slogged through to the end (4,144 words). I let my wife read what I'd written yesterday and she liked it. But I still wasn't sure.

I even called her today to ask if she'd really liked it or was just saying that. She said she'd really liked it and wanted to know what happened next. She also reminded me of how she reacted when I played her a recording of a piece of music that really moves me, and a film ditto. In both cases she was distinctly unimpressed by them and told me so. Her point being that she'll tell me the truth about such things, whether it's stuff I enjoy or things I've personally written.

So maybe it's better than I think it is at the moment. (And to be honest, I often go back and read things I've written long ago and am very pleased by what I rediscover. I hope this will be more of the same.) I'll let her read the whole thing and get her reaction. I may also need to try to find a "first reader" or two besides my lovely and talented wife.
