I received an invite code for Dreamwidth, so here I am. Journal mirroring will occur shortly. That is all! Anyone on my LJ friends list who would like an invite code (when/if I receive any), comment here.

My lovely and talented wife, of course, will get the first one.

ETA: Although I can't get the crossposting to work yet, dammit. Uh, a little help from anyone who's already figured it out?

I had to actually delete the crossposting info they seem to auto create and start fresh to get it to work.

I tried that, several times. But when I save it it keeps reverting to sinanju.livejournal.com@livejournal, which I think is the problem. I don't know how to fix that.

The crossposting was the hardest of the things for days. Sounds like your difficulty is different from what mine was though. I kept trying to edit my info and it would keep reverting.

Have you created an OpenID account on Dreamwidth? All it requires is your livejournal account name and password. Then you can create reading lists and play around on the site--and even post comments. Just no journal entries.

That's what I did, and that's how I got the invite code. It can't hurt.

Dreamwidth (www.dreamwidth.org) is another journal site based on a fork of the livejournal open source code. It's being spearheaded by some former livejournal employees, and they're intending to be more "fan friendly". By which they mean, based on my reading of their FAQ and other documents, that their approach to copyright and other issues is that they'll follow the law--but that until and unless they get either a DMCA takedown request or an actual judgment from a court stating that the material in question is, in fact, defamatory or otherwise actionable--they're not going to police peoples' posts (short of, you know, kiddie porn and the like).

They've made some changes to the software, and they're just getting started. I figured I'd give it a try. They're still in closed beta til the end of the month, then they'll go to open beta and allow people to buy accounts. You can buy one month's paid service and then let it lapse to a free account. But otherwise the only way to acquire an account is to obtain an invite code--which policy they're planning on sticking with for the foreseeable future to make sure their hardware can handle the load as the site grows and they work out the kinks.
