Oh Dear God

My wife left the living room to go surf the net on her computer in the den and she left the tv tuned to the Democratic Convention.

Fortunately I didn't hurt myself lunging for the remote and the blessed, blessed mute button.

It's not even that I'd never, ever vote for Obama (though I wouldn't). It's just...the thought of listening to a convention center full of politicians gassing on (Teddy "Chappaquiddick" Kennedy is gassing on even as I type this) makes me feel tired all over. The thought of actually attending such a thing is horrific. And the thought that, if I ever pursued a political career and--shocker of shockers--actually succeeded, that I'd have to participate in such things reminds me of why I would never, ever do such a stupid thing.

Not that I have the personality needed to be a politician anyhow. I'm an introvert. The necessity of campaigning would wear me to shreds in no time. But quite aside from that, a potent cure to the occasional insane "maybe I should run for some minor office and try to make a difference" thought is a few minutes of C-Span or local public access broadcasts of local government meetings.

Meetings. Dear god. I can barely endure the monthly ninety-minute all-staff meeting at my workplace. Meetings all day, every day? Listening to all the other politicians gassing on when I wasn't gassing on? A political circle-jerk? (Shudder)

No thanks. Politics is not for me. Somebody has to clean the sewers, and they seem to enjoy it, so--good luck to 'em.
