Falling Standards

sinanjuI'm a fanfic reader (and occasional fanfic writer). I like Highlander, Stargate: SG-1, X-Files, Buffy, Angel, Forever Knight, and many other fandoms. But mostly I like crossovers. That's where fanfic shines, in my opinion. It lets characters who will never, ever meet onscreen meet and interact. I'm a crossover slut--I'll forgive a lot of sins if the story has something to recommend it.
So it's very sad to look up the Stargate: SG-1 Fanfic Awards 2003 site and find so much...crap. I've picked over that site in the previous two years, and there've always been stories that weren't all that good. Sometimes it was the subject or the crossover (in the crossover story categories) that didn't interest me. Sometimes it was just plain bad writing. But there were also a lot of gems, some truly excellent stories.
Which makes sense, right? It's a site for nominating stories for awards. But this years...well, apparently all the really good stories have already been written, or the standards have really fallen. Or something. There's a lot of drivel on the voting lists this year.
So there has been one good crossover story (Stargate/Quantum Leap), and one Stargate/Sentinel/Invisible Man crossover that had a pretty good story obscured by cutesy overwritten language. Other than that...it's been pretty damn thin picking. Lots of poorly written stories displaying all the classic faults of amateur writing, including some that are nigh incoherent, lacking basic spelling, grammar or formatting.
Sigh. And I was so hoping for a goldmine of good new fics.

Disappointed by the Stargate Fanfic Awards site, I zipped over to the Seventh Dimension Highlander fanfic site and perused the new fics listed there. And found Incongruities by Lori Wright, a sequel to Circles, a Highlander/Witchblade crossover story of hers that I enjoyed a while back. So I saved both of them to my computer (they're big files) for later reading. Things are looking up.
