It's not gout, dammit!
Jul. 17th, 2008 10:10 pmI got a call from the doctor regarding the x-rays of my foot. I have "joint narrowing and bone spurs" consistent with arthritic degradation. In short, the joint ain't what it used to be.
The regimen of anti-inflammatory drugs and not overusing the joint has done wonders. I can walk normally again, though if I spend a LOT of time on my feet it starts to feel a little sensitive. The doctor said to take the drugs for 5-7 days, which I've done. She also said I could try running again once the foot felt okay, but to take it slow and easy at first--and to stop if it began to hurt again. I've still got plenty of the pills, plus a refill if I need it. We'll see how it goes.
I also have the number for the podiatrist if I feel it's necessary to see him. That would be in case of need for more heavy duty treatment. At this point I don't think it'll be necessary.
However, my doctor also recommended a shoe with a stiffer sole so the joint doesn't have to flex as much. This is mostly in the event of the joint acting up (again), not a full-time thing. Nonetheless, while cruising around Lincoln City today, we spotted a sign and pulled in to look for just such a shoe. And found a pair. And bought them.
So...it's official. After nineteen years in the Pacific Northwest--Portland, Oregon in particular--I've become a granola-munchin' Birkenstock-wearing Oregonian. God help me. Next thing you know, I'll be voting for Barack Obama and accusing myself of being a gun owning knuckledragger!
