Well, maybe not yet. But I'm working on it. Unlike [livejournal.com profile] fallenpegasus I'm not going to a gym, but I am working out on a regular basis, and have been (on a not quite so regular basis) for over a month now. [livejournal.com profile] snippy and I have set up a weightlifting bench in the basement with a couple of barbells and several dumbells and we work out together three times a week.

I do crunches for my abs, "Good morning" exercise (bend at waist with weight on shoulders) for back and abs, bench press for my chest, then dumbbell work for my lats, traps, deltoids, triceps and biceps. Snippy does mostly the same workout (a couple of variations) with lighter weights (one of the reasons we got two barbells, so we don't have to constantly fiddle with the weights), though she's catching up on a couple of the dumbbell exercises.

Our goals are threefold. We want to gain strength, we want to look better, and we want to increase our muscle mass so as to burn more calories so that we can lose weight more readily on the Atkins diet when we resume it next week. And the great thing is, it's working!

Even in only the month of so we've been at it, we can both see (and feel) an improvement. I have some definition in my arms and shoulders that I didn't have before. My chest is (a little) bigger. We both have more energy. It's a definite motivator to continue.

I've also taken up running again. Also three times a week. I'm only trying for a mile at this point, but considering my sedentary lifestyle the last few years, sitting in an office at a computer all day, sitting at my computer at home all night), that's quite enough for the first week or two. Once I can do the entire mile without having to walk any of it, I'll increase the distance. My goal is to get back to a minimum of 2.5 miles a day, and ideally up to 5 miles a day eventually.

One thing I need to do is add stretching to my regimen. I do stretch intermittently, but I need to add a consistent stretching component to my day. My hamstrings have always been tight, but exercise and running are only going to make them worse. It's going to take an intentional effort to improve my flexibility.
