Into west coast culture, that is.

By which I mean that I'm going to start taking some yoga classes! Not something that this formerly southern Virginia boy ever gave much (any) thought to. But I'm going to give it a try.

Why? A couple of reasons. Steve Barnes (www.darkush.blogspot.com) is a proponent of it and he's generally been a source of interesting and useful ideas. I first learned about intermittent fasting from reading him.

However, my main reason is more pragmatic and personal. Whatever validity there is to the more...esoteric benefits ascribed to yoga (not necessarily by Steve, but in general), it's good for flexibility. I'll be 49 in January*. I've never been particularly flexible and it's not going to get any better as I get older. Plus, working a desk job all day doesn't help.

So--yoga. Also (reason #3 for those keeping score at home), it'll give me something I can share with my lovely and talented wife [livejournal.com profile] snippy. She's done yoga before, though not since long before we were married. So we're going to take some classes together and I'll learn how to do the forms with the idea of not taking classes indefinitely but learning enough to be able to continue at home.

In other news, I'm looking for a standing computer desk. I reiterate: I sit at a desk all day at work. I also currently sit at a desk at home when I'm writing or netsurfing (like now). I want to replace my existing home computer desk with one where I can stand instead. So if anyone know where to get one, let me know. I know I could order one online but I'd rather look some over at a local store first.

*Presents are always welcome. Nubile young women wearing only a gift bow are especially welcome.

I adore yoga. I started taking it in college, and to this day I do it at home. I probably have such a bastardized version of the sun salutes that I do that an instructor would shake their head in shame, but I like them anyway. I will warn you though, there seems to be something about yoga and its relaxing qualities that...enhance flatulence (especially if you take a glass with oder adults, like I did!). It's a funny thing to ...hear when in the classroom for the first time.

These things are a mystery.

Thanks for that mental image. Well, at least now I'll be prepared for the reality....

Hey, I believe in preparing people for these things.

Yoga is great for us older bodies (I'll be 50 in 2009). I do it one or two times a week with my sister who teaches around town. Just make sure your teacher is a good one and if you're not comfortable with them, leave and find someone else.

Snippy and I are still in the process of trying to decide which yoga "school" to try. There are several of them in the area. We might end up trying two or three before we settle on one. Fortunately most of them have an introductory scheme that makes it fairly cheap to try them.

I love yoga. I do not, however, recommend that you try any form of yoga that is more intense to start off with; just like martial arts, the instructor should allow for your level of comfort and flexibility.

As for the desk - you might like a drafting table, as they can be adjusted, but they may be more expensive and harder to find. IKEA has a desk whose height can be adjusted: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60111123

We looked at websites for a couple of yoga places. Some of the classes looked interesting until I realized that the *** and **** ratings meant they were very intense classes. Fortunately there are beginner classes available as well, so we'll probably start with those.

I know that Safco makes a standing computer station that looks like what I'm interested in. I just don't know if I can find one locally. I could have it delivered via the tubes of the internet but I'd rather buy it here.

stand-up computer desk

Have you tried a drafting table? They typically are higher than normal desks. I remember the control room at Dad's radio station was designed so you could sit at it in a "bar stool" or stand. I always liked that idea. So when I set up my first home office I put a counter top (available from the big box home improvement stores for a pretty good price over top of two 3-drawer filing cabiniets (about 42 inches high). Then I went and got a swivel stool and I was in business. I would have done that this time but I did not have the space I had last time (why did we get that piano from the in-laws?).

Just a thought.

Merry Christmas,

Alan

I've looked at drafting tables, but they're too big--almost as deep as they are wide--for my purposes. There are some stand-up computer desks available online, and I will probably order one from Office Depot and have it delivered to the local store.

Yeah, I remember the control room and that's what I want to do. I'll probably get a bar stool so I can prop myself on that sometimes.
