I'm feeling much better now....
Jul. 8th, 2007 05:21 amThe Firefox formatting fiasco of 2007 is a thing of the past!
How did I fix it?
Well...I didn't. Not really. I discovered that if I launched Firefox as the root user, it worked properly. Therefore the issue was clearly something screwed up in my daily user profile. So I created a new default profile, migrated my programs, documents, music, video and other data files to the new profile (and made sure to change the ownership of said files--a lesson learned long ago in a reformatting incident). I downloaded a new version of Firefox 2.0 and installed it.
It works just like it's supposed to. I've now gone in and added all the extensions (Greasemonkey, NoScript, AdBlock Plus, a few others) and imported my bookmarks. It's just the way I want it. Again.
I'll leave the old profile alone for a couple or three weeks. If in that time I haven't discovered that I overlooked something I need, I'll delete it. (This was also an opportunity to create a clean new profile--abandoning programs and files that I installed at some point but never really used. So that's the silver lining in all of this.)
And now to back up the new profile....
