I'm writing on my Pentium 4, 1.4 GHz one year-old PC in 16-color, minimal resolution. Some of the websites look very strange (and hard to read) in that format. Why?

Because I tried to install some software on my PC to work with images from our brand new digital camera. The laughably-named "install shield" was a piece of junk. Three times I tried to install the software, and all three times the installation stalled out with no warning and locked up. Eventually, by installing each program separately, I managed to get them installed...or so I thought. But when I uploaded three pics from the camera to try out the software, my PC locked up tight. I restarted it...and discovered a large error message: RUNDLL32 has screwed the pooch! Disaster Imminent!

Okay, it didn't say that, but that was the gist of it. Plus, no mouse and the keyboard didn't work. I was totally hosed. Fortunately, I was careful to save all the OEM disks for the PC and software when I bought it, so I dug out the Win98 disk and attempted to restore it. That didn't work, so I wound reinstalling the OS.

Which was mostly successful. That is, it's working again. I didn't lose any software or data files. Except, apparently, the drivers or set-up files (or something) for the graphics card and monitor. It defaulted to "safe mode" standards and I cannot for the life of me get it do otherwise. By about 10 p.m. last night (this happened about 4 p.m.) I wanted to cry (and simultaneously wanted to kill whoever was responsible for producing that POS install shield).

I've moved on, though. I suffered through grief, anger, bargaining. Now I've reached the Acceptance stage. I'm resigned to enduring this lousy resolution until I can download new drivers at work tomorrow (DSL connection there, as opposed to the lousy 28.8 performance I get at home) and try to reinstall them. If that doesn't work, I'll be very, very unhappy.
