Rednecks: Defending the World from Evil
Feb. 14th, 2007 09:58 amSo I just watched last week's episode of Supernatural, in which Sam is possessed by a demon and has killed one Hunter* and is targeting another, who is named Bob. Sam appears at Bob's door and is invited in. Bob offers him a beer. They drink.
Sam spews the beer in a cloud of steam/smoke and doubles over in pain. "What did you do?" Sam demands.
"A little holy water in the beer," says Bob, unperturbed. "Sam never would have noticed. But you're not Sam, are you?" he says calmly before coldcocking demon Sammy. Later on, he and Dean work an exorcism to free Sam. It doesn't go as easily as it should--but Bob ultimately manages to dispel the demon. Later he asks the Winchester boys if they know a hunter named Steve Wandell. They ask why.
Bob explains that Steve was found murdered in his own home. His buddies are looking for whoever did it. Dean says no, they've never heard of him. Sam says, "Dean..." Bob says they should keep it that way, that Steve's buddies are looking to lynch someone and they aren't likely to stop and listen to reason, "you understand what I'm saying?"
I like Bob. I like it that he isn't stupid. He doesn't take anything for granted. A little holy water in the beer doesn't hurt but it could--and did--save his life. I like it that he knows damn well that possessed Sam killed Steve, but that Sam wasn't responsible--and that Steve's Hunter friends aren't going to stop to listen to explanations if they learn Sam was involved. I hope we see Bob again.
Did I mention that Bob is a middle-aged white guy with a beard, a beer gut, wearing a flannel shirt and a baseball cap? That he looks and sounds** like a stereotypical Good Ol' Boy or redneck?
We've seen the Winchesters, and Ellen and her daughter Jo, and the denizens of their bar--which caters to Hunters--and the various rough looking sorts who hang out there. It just tickles me to see a stereotypical Good Ol' Boy as one of the smart, tough defenders of mankind.
*Hunters are people who know the truth--that the supernatural is all around us, and they're out tracking and killing the monsters. There is a small underground sub-culture of these folk in Supernatural.
**Except when he's reciting a Latin exorcism, anyhow....

I wish they would get back to killing new and interesting beasties and quit all of this emo drama, for Cliff's sake.

Let's get the focus back on exactly what Dean says in the "previously ons" every damn week:
"I think dad wants us to take up where he left off. Hunting things. Saving people. The family business!"
Yes, that.
