Well, this sucks!
May. 8th, 2006 07:32 pmGot home tonight, started the hamburgers cooking and walked into the dining room and hit the power switch on my computer. Power light comes on, and...nothing. So I try several more times. No change. After fuming a bit (okay, maybe a lot) I yanked all the connections out of the back of the box and carted it off to the local computer shop. I feared the worst--a crashed hard drive--though that seemed unlikely. It had been working perfectly well when I turned it off last night.
I'm typing this on our new laptop, which I'm very glad we have. My PC is still at the shop. After a few tests, the tech diagnosed the problem: the motherboard is fried. How? I don't know and he didn't say, if he even knows. The good news is that they'll have the new motherboard in tomorrow; the bad news is that it'll probably be 10 days or so before they get it installed (they're busy).
The worse news is that it's entirely likely that I could lose everything on the hard drive. That would be frustrating, but not disastrous. All my software is either on CD or downloadable from the internet. The vast majority of my data files (mostly fiction of my own, or fic I've downloaded) is likewise backed up or can be retrieved again. A few very recent (but also very small) text files aren't backed up, but otherwise my backups are pretty well up to date.
So...it could be worse.
