settled over the audience waiting to see Hellboy. And not in a good way.

No, it was the stunned silence of disbelief, of theatre-goers grokking the mind-numbing stupidity and mega-million dollar lottery process that is Hollywood. It was the stunned and uncomfortable silence of people watching other people making fools of themselves, and not in a funny way--in a sad, pathetic grasping-at-straws way. It was the "oh God, please let it be over already" silence that drags on, laughter-free, cough-free, crackling candy wrapper-free as the audience stares in horror at an arrogantly, abysmally, agressively unfunny trailer for a so-called comedy film.

It was, in short, the trailer for White Chicks by the Wayans brothers. Two young black FBI agents--and we already know we're in for a rough ride--get assigned to protect two rich white heiresses. Something happens (it was not made clear exactly what), and the heiresses balk at appearing at their high school? college? reunion, but for unfathomable reasons it is apparently crucial that they do so. So Amos n' Andy our two stalwart FBI agents decide that the only thing to do is wear whiteface and dress in drag and impersonate the heiresses.

Cringing yet? Bad as the concept is, the execution is even worse. I can only hope that the Wayans brothers are hooted at and mocked for the rest of their pathetic lives, ideally while wearing a Jack in the Box uniform and asking "Do you want fries with that?" in their post-Hollywood careers. Alas, despite the stunning lack of audience response, it'll probably make millions. I mean, Adam Sandler and Pauly Shore are still making movies, god help us.
