...prompted by someone on my friends list commenting that in her current mood, seeing Pirates 3 would not be a good idea, what with people getting killed or cursed to sail the Flying Dutchman's ship forever despite it being a Disney movie.

Could be worse. Let's hope the Turner family don't appear in Pirates IV, if it gets made.

Why? It's a DISNEY FILM. And what do we know about families in Disney films?

That's right--Elizabeth is a DEAD WOMAN WALKING. She'll expire abruptly be dead before she hits the ground, leaving Will to raise their child alone in classic Disney fashion.

ETA: So, in this vein let's consider the Pirates films, shall we?

Will Turner: first seen as a young child, the sole survivor of a shipwreck. Later we learn that his father is still alive. His mother? Not so much.

Elizabeth Swann: traveling to America with her father. No mother evident; we can safely assume she's deceased. Standard Disney family situation.

Jack Sparrow: POTC 3 demonstrates that his mother, too, is deceased. (Or at least, let's HOPE she's deceased....), though Jack being an adult at this point, the matter is largely moot.

I now have my entire system, from OS to my most recent fanfic efforts archived on DVDs. Three of them. Two for the system and all the software (a combined total of about 8 gb) and another for the documents, music, videos, images and download and /etc folders (2.5 gb). The last full backup was in January, six months ago.

Since I can't rewrite DVDs (I understand that rewrite-able DVDs exist but that "only a madwoman" would trust them), depending on how often I backup everything, I could burn through a boatload of DVDs. Admittedly, I don't need to backup my whole system every time--aside from adding an occasional new piece of software or tweaking settings, that won't change much. But still.

I thought about getting a flash drive to make interim backups of my data files (documents, music, videos, images, etc). But I'm told that they're not reliable enough for that, not in the long run. But what about the short run. Assuming I did a full backup of all my data to a DVD on a monthly basis, is a flash drive trustworthy enough for keeping up with day-to-day additions?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
