I'm back in the saddle again this morning. I've written 1800 words today on a short story. I vacillate between thinking it's crap and thinking it's pretty good, even if only for a first draft. So I'm trying to adhere to Heinlein's rules and write, finish and mail without endless polishing. It can be difficult.
Before I sat down at the computer this morning I had a moment of complete self-doubt. How could I possibly think I could be a writer? I couldn't even think of something to write today! But then I just sat down, opened up the second story I'd begun last week and just started writing.
Kept telling myself it doesn't have to be perfect. It doesn't even have to be good. (But I am also not in a position to tell the difference anyhow. I'm too close.) And I wrote. And I even managed to write a little faster than last week, around 650 words an hour, give or take a few. I'd like to be faster--but that was better flow (more writing, less editing) than before. So I'm happy with it.
Now for lunch and some other, more mundane chores. I may write more later too. We'll see.

Date: 2009-05-11 10:42 pm (UTC)I've signed on to WritersMarket.com and have found other online market aggregation sites I use. I'm also submitting to the highest paying appropriate markets I can find, per Dean Wesley Smith. The worst thing they can do is turn you down, and if they do, then you submit the story to the next market, and the next...
While there are some markets that won't look at unagented manuscripts, for the most part I don't think agents are necessary (or even helpful) for submitting short stories. Or even novels--though once you've got an offer to buy it, then they can earn their keep.
