Just got home from my date with the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] snippy. We watched Monsters vs Aliens 3D.

I am gobstopped. That is the the most amazing 3D viewing experience I've ever had. As [livejournal.com profile] snippy said, "This is the killer app for movie theatres." To be more specific, this could be the answer to how you get people back into movie theatres when DVDs and Netflix and cable on-demand programming can provide them with most of the good parts of the movie-going experience without the problems (rude and noisy fellow patrons). Oh sure, eventually you'll be able to reproduce this is a home theatre system--but not for a while. If you want to see a film in 3D, you'll have to watch it in the theatre.

I've sat through "3D" movies before and been distinctly unimpressed. But this was different. The glasses I wore fit over my regular glasses with no difficulty. They dimmed the screen slightly but otherwise looked and felt like ordinary sunglasses. And the effects were incredible. On a number of occasions, people, monsters or vehicles moved into the foreground and I swear they really looked like they were hanging in space a few feet in front of me. Several times a person or a vehicle moved forward (toward me) and out of the bottom of the frame--and aside disappearing as they left the screen, they really looked like they were coming forward out of the movie.

The movie itself was fun, too. But it was the 3D effects that floored me. There were previews as well for two or three other 3D films they're releasing--and the effects were equally impressive. I'm definitely up for more of this.
