My GOD that was awful!

[sound of crickets chirping]

I repeat, great googly-moogly--that was awful!

Not the story, really--though it had definite problems*. But Expletive Deleted! The director of photography needs to be taken out back of the barn, beaten until he'll never walk, talk or feed himself again without help, and then dumped at a third-rate hospital in some desolate backwater of the world.

The unnecessary, intrusive, off-putting and (for my wife) nausea-inducing SHAKY-CAM effects were...unnecessary, intrusive and off-putting. And not just in violent action scenes. Not just in outdoor scenes of people walking. I'm talking about sedate scenes like one in a boardroom, where we're focused on a man SITTING IN A CHAIR, LISTENING to someone else speak. And the camera is jittering and shaking and doing minor zooms as if some spastic retard was holding the camera. It was like that through the whole ******* movie (with the rare and all-too-brief exception of occasional establishing shots).

This was NOT "The Blair Witch Project" or "Cloverfield", where at least there was some in-story rationale for this crap. It was the sort of "art for art's sake" ******** that prompted Steve Jackson years ago to opine that when designing covers for GURPS books, the first thing one should do is shoot the Art Director.

This is one movie I won't see again. I also have absolutely no interest in owning it. If not for the arrogantly, aggressively, abysmally stupid camerawork, I might be interested. But as it stands? **** no.

And I'll say as much to anyone and everyone I discuss this film with.

*About which I may have something to say later. But not right now. Right now I'm still too focused on the shaky-cam travesty.

Wow. I hadn't realized it uses SHAKY-CAM. That stuff makes me nauseous so I guess I won't be seeing the movie regardless of story quality. I like Will Smith and superhero movies, but not more than keeping food down. I'm having enough trouble keeping food down right now as it is being sick.

You didn't realize the movie was shot in shaky-cam for the same reason I didn't--because the ads don't show you that. I know it's a deliberate deception because the scene of Hancock drunkenly flying and narrowly missing a passenger jet, which we see in the trailers, is shot in shaky cam when you see it in the theater.

I'd already decided not to see this film, even though I really like Will Smith and I enjoy most superhero stuff. I'm now doubly glad I decided to opt out. It's a shame. It could have been really, really cool.

Sigh.

Wow. Thanks for the warning. I was toying with seeing this. Now I'm really, really won't!

Wow. I'd be poorer, sicker, and angry if I'd seen it then. Knowing they're pulling a deliberate deception like that... *shakes head.*

Thanks for the warning; I thought it looked interesting from the trailer, but I think I'll wait for small screen, or skip it.

Heh. I guess I didn't even notice the shaky-cam stuff. I was too caught up in the fact that it felt like the outline-notes-version of two separate movies (original+sequel) stapled together and filmed without all the character detail and worldbuilding that would really be necessary to pull off what they were trying to do with it.

My brother enjoyed it. I, OTOH, walked out of there thinking "WTH?" and desperately wanting to look up mythology sources to try and make better sense out of what I'd just seen...

...and also wanting to write fic to fix it. *resisting firmly*
