Well, not really a fever dream because I don't have a fever. But still...

Came home early from work. Not feeling well. Partly just tired, partly feely puny in that I'm-too-braindead-to-actually-accomplish-anything-productive-today kind of way. Anyhow, I got home and went to bed. Where I slept for about an hour before being awakened by...athunderstorm?

Yes, indeed. A thunderstorm. With hail. It varied in intensity, as did the hail, becoming quite loud at times and diminishing to almost nothing at others. Quite variable. I enjoyed listening to it. I've always liked seeing or hearing powerful thunderstorms from the comfort and safety of a nice, warm house. But they're very rare here in Portland--not like back in Virginia, where you could get them frequently in the summer. (Very briefly, usually, but sometimes almost daily during the twenty-minute downpours that oh-so-briefly washed all the humidity out of the air. At least for 20 minutes or so, until the sun reappeared and dried up all the standing water and it resumed its rightful place in the air....)

The storm passed. I went back to sleep. And had a strange dream. If you follow Heroes you'll probably understand this. If not, not.

So the Heroes are all together. More like the X-Men than the Heroes on television. The Claire analogue, who isn't exactly Claire, but close enough, is present when someone else discovers that they can do something new--something unrelated to their main power. So she decides to try something new herself. She tries to will a sheet of paper to turn into an origami bird. And she succeeds, essentially. It's more like a "cut paper" constructed bird, but it comes alive and does what she asks and communicates with her through gestures when she asks it questions. Pretty cool!

But Pseudo-Claire is apparently a rules lawyer. Having discovered this new power, she decides to see what else she can do. She turns a candy wrapper into a plain sheet of white paper just to see if she can do it. Then turns that into a fake government ID. Or, actually, into a fake ID that will present whatever credentials she wants (i.e., "psychic paper" from Dr Who). Later on, when the heroes are discussing how to deal with the Sylar situation, she announces that she has a Secret level government clearance and shows it off. Asked where she got it, she announces, "I made it!" proudly, letting every assume she forged it the old fashioned way.

She continues to explore the limits of her power, and can apparently create just about anything she wants if she concentrates hard enough. They don't last very long, especially if they're complex, but they come in handy now and then.

Later on, Claire has the misfortunate to run into the Sylar Analogue (played in my dream by actor Adam Goldberg). He doesn't kill her on the spot. He wants all of the Heroes. So he forces Claire to take him back to the house the Heroes all share. It's empty. But Claire manifests a couple of Heroes who confront Sylar. He kicks their asses and they vanish. He continues to threaten and browbeat Claire. She keeps throwing up representations of her fellow Heroes, who appear and then vanish again, as often as not after Sylar smacks them around like red-headed stepchildren.

When one such manifestation actually knocks Sylar down, Claire runs for her life, fleeing the building. She doesn't get far before Sylar catches up to her. By now he's realized that she's got still another really nifty power and decides that he'll go ahead and steal them now. He'll deal with the rest of the group later. Claire conjures more of the heroes to menace Sylar. He is not impressed.

At which point, we go back to the moment when Sylar caught Claire the first time. Only this time it's from the POV of someone else. (I'm not sure who.) He, and the rest of the Heroes are, in fact, in the house--in the front room. They hear voices--Claire's and Sylar's--as they approach the door and they realize what's happening even as Claire and Sylar burst into the house.

Sylar glances into the front room from the foyer--just as Claire makes everyone in it vanish. It turns out that Claire isn't creating phantom objects. She's generating illusions (which explains how the psychic paper works). She makes the front room seem empty because she knows Sylar can take them all in a sudden fight in a confined space. Protected by the illusion of not being there, the other Heroes witness Sylar threatening Claire.

Most of them realize what she's done and wait for an opportunity strike when they have a chance at success. A couple of them don't. They're too impetuous or macho to wait, so they attack--ineffectually. Those weren't phantoms Claire conjured. They made themselves known when they attacked Sylar--and Claire vanished them again afterward. Repeatedly. Until one of them actually manages to knock Sylar down.

That's when she runs, luring him outside and distracting him from thinking about what's going on. He catches up to her very quickly. He's just about to do some psychic brain surgery on her when the rest of the group show up. He's still under the impression that Claire is conjuring phantoms (albeit phantoms which can affect the real world).

Sadly for Sylar, they're not phantoms. And having had time to work out a plan, and with room to act now that they're outside. They stomp Sylar into strawberry jam in short order.
