The Obamination Lurches Nearer

So He Who Shall Make The Planet Heal And The Seas Recede was in Seattle today, fucking up air and ground traffic. Per the report on the radio today, he was there mostly to do fundraisers for Democrats, but he was also going to make some kind of official announcement. See, if it was a purely private fundraising trip, the White House and/or fedgov would have to pay for it; but because he has the figleaf of doing some kind of official business in passing, the locals get to pick up a big part of the tab.

To Hell with him. (And with Bush before him, and Clinton, and Bush, and so on.) Let them pay for their own goddamn security. It's bad enough when they inflict Security Theatre on us in airports. It's unconscionable when they inflict it on entire cities. And bill them for the privilege to boot. (It's like the Chinese government shooting you and then billing your family for the cost of the ammo.)

I understand that the Bush White House(s) referred to Portland as "Little Beirut" because of all the protests here whenever they deigned to grace the city with their presence. I supported Bush (both of them), but frankly, if the "Little Beirut" thing ever dissuaded them from visiting because it was just too much trouble...good. I only wish the locals in any city or state could tell the feds to pay for their own damned security, and bring their own damned cops to block the roads if they think it's necessary.

Anyway. In happier news, I'm reading HELL FIRE by Ann Aguirre, and I'm really enjoying it. It's urban fantasy, but it's different There's not a vampire or a werewolf to be seen (at least, not so far). There's magic aplenty, in various interesting and unusual flavors, and I really like it. Even the requisite romantic tension between our heroine and the two male leads is more interesting than usual, and has a lot more to do with fundamental (and clashing) character traits than I'm used to seeing. I'm only halfway through it so far, so I suppose the novel might crash and burn yet--but I doubt it. I already intend to go find the first Corine Solomon novel (this is the second), and I'll have to look over the three books in another series listed on the "Also by" page.

I finished, line-edited, spell-checked and emailed a new story today. I sent it to a market that gave me a nice rejection letter on the last effort. I'm hoping it sells. Yeah, I always hope that, but this time I have some reason to think it might actually happen. We'll see.
