Actually, that's what I wanted initially but the install kept failing--I couldn't get some of the files. I don't know why.

I tried getting some updated codecs for Xine, but no matter what I tried I kept getting the "this program is still crippled*" error message. So I tried VLC again and finally got the files I needed. (I don't know if the website was having troubles or it was a security issue--I installed a key from that website in the interim.)

And now I can view my DVDs. Yay!

*Not in so many words, but that's the gist of it.
